Mid-week ramblings
So it's day 5 into the first real bout with the flu I've had in two years, and I think I'm beginning to feel human again. I still refuse to ever get a flu shot, so I just strike it up as achieving some immunity for the next two years. Recruiting: Brian Cook worked his tush off this week on recruiting articles and got a hold of a couple guys that no one seems to be talking to right now: Davonte Neal and Kevon Seymour. Check out those articles in case you missed them. I also managed to get enough vocal ability to get a quick update from Cedric Dozier on Monday. There's been lots of recruiting info on the site all week. Site stuff: Also, an update on the message boards -- they're going through a MAJOR re-do. That was Phase One of th… -

Pac-12 Weekend Wrap
Overall, the conference went 8 and 4 for the weekend, with losses coming to Oregon State (Sacramento St.), Colorado (Hawai'i), UCLA (Houston), and Oregon (LSU). The rest, Utah, Cal, Arizona, Arizona State, Stanford, Washington, Washington State, and USC were victorious. The sloppiest wins were USC over Minnesota, Cal over Fresno State, and Washington over Eastern Washington. The biggest blowouts were Stanford over San Jose St., WSU over Idaho, and Arizona over Northern Arizona. On the injury list: Jeff Tuehl -- Washington State -- Clavicle Kenjan Barner -- Oregon -- Ankle sprain Jermaine Kearse -- Washington -- Ankle sprain The losses: I was able to keep an eye on most of these games, the most embarrassing to the conference being the Oregon implos… -

It's gameday!
The long-awaited revelation of the 2011 Husky Football team is about to take place, and there's plenty of action around the Pac-12 today as well. Aside from the Willie-Bowl over in Texas, most of the teams in the conference are playing clearly inferior opponents, but UCLA is at Houston which could be a little more challenging as well as USC's game against Minnesota. Much is always said about "keys to game" for the Huskies' games, but with this Eastern Team, the biggest key to the game is just to show up and play the way they know how to play. That, in itself, should be enough to dispose of the Eagles. The difference between D1 and D2 teams is depth, talent amongst the skill players, and strength. So that's my "key to the game" for … -

Wednesday morning links, news and notes
Lots of Pac-12 stuff today -- but I'm still hard-pressed to find any articles on Eastern. Here's a video of Les Miles and more as LSU prepares for Oregon. The Salt Lake City Tribune takes a look at the Pac-12 and what to expect. John Canzano of the Oregonian has a report on where LaGarrette Blount is now, two years after the punch that more or less ended his Duck career. Bud Withers of the Seattle Times was on the line yesterday when we spoke with the Pac-12 coaches and here is his report here. The annual Herbie Awards are on ESPN, via Ted Miller, and Kirk Herbstreit is definitely showing Chris Polk some mad love. Bob Condotta wrote a good article about the goals for the Huskies' special teams unit this fall in today's Seatt… -

Pac-12 Coach-Speak
The Pac-12 coaches teleconference with the media wasn't that much longer than I had anticipated -- but it definitely takes up a good chunk of the morning. Here's just a quick rundown of some of things that were covered. Stanford coach David Shaw is a real cerebral guy, and one thing that was asked of him (in an almost subtle insult to Oregon's issues with Darron Thomas), was about the role of leadership with his top players both on and off the field, particulary the quarterback. "They have to be the coach in the huddle", Shaw said, as he asserted that they must be upstanding citizens and make top notch decisions in all aspects as college athletes, "both on and off the field", he said. Burn... Mike Stoops talked about … -

Tuesday Morning Links
It's Tuesday morning -- and that means two things.. The Pac-12 coaches will be available to the media via teleconference starting at 10 am, and it doesn't look as though the question and answer session will be divided up into North and South -- so it will be longer than it has been in the past. Tuesday also means we're all one day closer to the season opener against Eastern. Again, practice will be closed today, but the media will be able to get some notes and interviews. Coach Sarkisian won't be available but the focus will be on the defensive players and coaches. Realdawg campus reporter, Alex Warneke will be at Husky Stadium getting the low down for our readers. In the meantime here's some links to some Husky news articles this morn… -

Quick Press Conference Notes
Coach Sark had some updates on the status of injured players, who will redshirt, and the fact that one Husky player will get a 6th year. First off, WR Cody Bruns will get a 6th year, redshirt season. Bruns, who lost his father this summer prior to fall camp, has undergone a lot of personal issues surrounding that loss and missed some time on the field at practice. Giving him a redshirt season is a great show of Sark's confidence in Bruns and how much he has yet to accomplish at UW. Also, Sark said that there's nothing new to report on the status of Chris Polk, Quinton Richardson, or Johri Fogerson in terms of their progress in recovering from minor injuries at fall camp. Sark called the redshirt situation a "grey area" for guys such as James Sampl…Tagged in this post: Danny Shelton (2015), Austin Sefarian-Jenkins (2015), Bishop Sankey (2015), James Sample (2015), Marcus Peters (2015) -

Some early evening notes and links
Bob Condotta posted a pretty cook video showing the "ring" around the track at Husky Stadium. What it is is the marker of how far to the field the stands will reach once the new field is built. I posted the video Bob made here. Due to a schedule mix-up, our practice beat writer, Alex wasn't able to be at practice today -- but Bob did post some info from UW's practice as well -- so for today, it's Bob Condotta's time to shine on Realdawg.com. Due to the fact that Coach Sark already met with the media earlier today, he wasn't available following the afternoon practice. Condotta reported that fullback,Nick Holt Jr. had an "unspecified injury" -- for the full report, go here. Here's a link to a whole bunch of stuff on Eastern. You will… -

Sark's game-week presser coming up at noon
Sark's game-week presser is coming up in just short bit to herald in the 2011 season. You can catch the live event via radio on KJR or on UWTV statewide. We'll also be blogging here on Realdawg.com and tweeting the highlights. Realdawg's Che Chon will be at the U also talking to players following Sark's press conference and we will have full coverage following the entire event. Practice is at 3:15 today and is closed to the public but open to the media. There will be no "Sark quotes" following practice because he already addressed us earlier in the day. Also, Sark's radio show will be aired on KJR from 4:30 to 5:30. So far as I can tell, no EWU two-deep depth chart has been released yet. Checked both their official site and the Spokesman… -

Friday thoughts: God, please let college football return to normal
Having grown up in a Husky home, perhaps it's easy to take things like winning, tradition and championships for granted. I remember walking into my dad's study after the Apple Cup most years, asking my dad, "Which bowl game this year? Do we know yet?" Back then, that was just taken for granted. And my dad, God bless him, would pull out his stat book and go over his hand-written list of the Associated Press Top 25 and start trying to figure out the answer to that question. There was no internet, no quick information to draw from about how the bowl selection processes would pan out, and there was no BCS. So it was, sometimes, a mystery until the official statement came by way of the Seattle Times or P.I.. Ah yes -- those Saturday afternoons, sitting in front … -

Friday Morning Press Box
There's a lot of news around the country in the world of college football. With the closing of practice today the tension is building for the home opener next weekend. Husky fans will get a chance to see their Dawgs in a more relaxed atmosphere at Raise the Woof tonight, however. Here's a look at some headlines around the nation this morning. The situation in Miami just became clearer, as eight players have been declared ineligible. The Miami athletic department now has a window -- albeit, a small one -- of opportunity to appeal those rulings and get their players back on the field at some point in the earlier part of the season. The Miami Herald has a full article on the situation in Coral Gables. Ivan Maisel also chimes in on the situation in his 3-point stance col… -

Change to schedule: Practices today are closed to everyone
The UW sent out a memo to all nembers of the media this afternoon announcing that practices today will be closed both to the press and the public. Steve Sarkisian may be available to members of the media following practice, and we are waiting word on that. Why this change has taken place, we do not know but practices are likewise closed tomorrow prior to the Raise the Woof celebration at UW. UPDATE: UW just sent another memo stating that there will be no press availability following practice today either. The next availability will be on Saturday. … -

Thursday Morning Links
Raise the Woof is tomorrow night, and today is the last day until Saturday that we have any access to practice. Alex Warneke came to work for us this week, as he's become our campus reporter covering practices. In case you missed Wednesday's practice report, here's a link. With the season opener just over a week away, there's a lot of reading to catch up for those of you who have been off the net for the summer. We've had a series of articles about the issues at Oregon, Miami and all the rest of the current scandels going on right now, and despite what you read, there have been plenty of off-season horrors in the past --- but this is the first time in recent memory that so much of this news has broken this close to the beginning of the season. … -

COOK UNPLUGGED: H.B.R
Just because Lache Seastrunk is gone from Oregon, Duck fans think that their problem is solved -- and they can prove they received no recruiting advantage from Willie Lyles. Yay -- it's all over? Sorry, Bill Breath -- it gets even better in my mind. Who doesn't like a long-winded drama? Will Phil throw Chip under the bus? Will Chip throw Phil under the bus? Will the state patrolman throw Phil and Chip under the bus? Or will the Oregon special investigations unit throw all of them under the bus? Back to reality.. I really don't sit there and read too many articles, but I just read where DeAnthony Thomas is just a running back now? OMG, he was the best DB prospect in the country last year? For one thing -- we all know Thomas has g… -

God Raptures Seastrunk
In some damning revelations today, Lache Seastrunk told ESPN Radio in Waco, Texas that he felt that God had "pulled" him out of the storm coming to the University of Oregon. The Duck spin-doctors, of course, will say it's sour grapes because he was thrust so far into the depths of the depth chart -- but if that's true then I'm 5'9" and naturally blonde. We all know better than that... In our ongoing coverage of the issues coming out of Eugene this summer, the Seastrunk news is not surprising. In the article we ran on Sunday evening about the current scandals in college football, we predicted that Seastrunk, once he's settled in at Baylor, will start talking to the local media in Texas. But in shear First 48 fashion, he might also roll o… -

For Fun: The Realdawg.com Husky Player Awards
Now that Husky fans have had a chance to get to know the 2011 team a little better this August, we felt it was time, based on fall camp, to create some special honors for those Dawgs who have stood out and made a strong impression in some way. Smiliest Huskies: Keith Price, Jonathan Timu Best Hair: Matt Lyons Best Comedian: Chris Polk Most likely to score a touchdown in the opening game: Jermaine Kearse Most likely to star in an action hero film one day: Mike Criste Tim Allen look-a-like winner: Keil Rasp Most likely to star as the leading man in a Tyler Perry movie one day: Jesse Callier Coolest tattoo: Jonathan Amosa Best Singing Voice: Meda Ta'amu Best Laugh: Erik Kohler Best Media… -

Afternoon quick notes
The Huskies don't take the field for their second session of practice until this evening (7 pm), so things are a little quiet around Montlake this afternoon. We spoke briefly with departed linebacker, Victor Burnett today, who told us his coach back home is working on getting him in touch with some schools. He's wanting to complete some sort of transfer process by the end of this week but doesn't know yet where he'll wind up. Burnett said the sudden departure from the Husky program was one of a "miscommunication" that he felt warranted his leaving. Of course, players who are dismissed never acknowlege their own wrong-doing in such things -- he wouldn't elaborate much more than that, but isn't hanging his head and is back home in California with … -

Tuesday Morning Links and Ramblings
The last couple of days were a little bit uneventful both in recruiting and with Husky football, but sometimes that's a good thing. Except for the news of Caleb Smith to Oregon State (which most of us saw coming) and a continuing demand for someone to get the Death Penalty this year, the fact that there's not a lot of drama in Montlake is something to smile about. I know I like to pick on Oregon on this site, because 1) they deserve it and 2) they deserve it, but another Duck has bailed on our good friend and moral leader, Chip Kelly this week. Or, as QB leader Darron Thomas affectionately calls him: "Chip". News came out yesterday that corner, Scott Grady has been granted a release to go elsewhere. Grady, who played in 12 games last season, must be -- yet anot… -

Seastrunk gone, Kelly next?
The implosion is beginning at Oregon. Sure, Duck fans will say Lache Seastrunk is transferring because he was "buried in the depth chart". But he's buried in the depth chart because having him on the roster right now has been a liability for Oregon. One can only imagine the stress his name has caused Chip Kelly. He probably doesn't want to hear his name or the name of Willie Lyles anymore. But will this cause Seastrunk to open up a little more with the NCAA when the investigation gets into full swing? Oregon is caught between a rock and a hard place at this point with Seastrunk. Keeping him on the roster could be a detriment, but letting him go could enable him to talk more. Poor Chip. He's officially become a member of the not-ready-for-prime… -

Friday night practice notes
A few notes from practice. Kyle Lewis didn't make it into the UW, as he was unable to get clearance from the NCAA. Coach Sarkisian said Chris Polk is doing very well so far in his recovery but they don't want to rush anything. "He moved around really well yesterday -- we knew he'd be a little sore today", Sarkisian said, "He feels good." Cort Dennison sat out a bit because he got kicked in the shins, but Sarkisian said that it was planned to be a light night for Dennison anyway. Sark is trying to really evaluate the younger guys right now before making decisions about who will and won't redshirt, so he's giving them a lot of reps. "But our one's and two's will get plenty of work as well", the coach noted. Coac…Tagged in this post: Cort Dennison (2011) -

Wednesday Practice Blog: Gettin' Rough out There
Wednesday practice was "spirited", to say the least, for one Husky. Enough so that he got sent to the sidelines for a little "teaching". But obviously, somebody is ready for the season to begin and it's Nate Fellner. "I love Nate Fellner. I love him. That's what makes Nate unique. He's a got a real streak in him that makes him special, and he's tough", Steve Sarkisian said Wednesday following practice, explaining why Fellner got sent to a "time-out", "He's got to play within the guidelines and parameters that we set for each practice. It wasn't a scrimmage tonight, so we had to stay up. We weren't supposed to be on the ground, and he had a tendency here today to have them go in the ground when he was maki…Tagged in this post: Nate Fellner (2013), Brett Bafaro (2012) -

OREGON: The story just keeps writing itself...
As if it weren't bad enough for Oregon having to deal with the public relations nightmare of the Willie Lyles saga, and then the videotape of Cliff Harris and Darron Thomas getting stopped and admitting to smoking weed prior to being stopped, now Chip Kelly is being his usual charming self to reporters about the whole situation. I admit, Don James wasn't always the most jovial guy back in the day, and certainly Lambright, Willingham and Gilbertson all had their moments of being obtuse and flat out snotty to reporters (Rick Neuheisel was usually Mr. Happy no matter what was going on), but Kelly is acting like parents on Judge Judy who refuse to believe their perfect child did anything wrong. Usually Ms. Scheindlin hammers those parents for being so gullible. She would… -

Tuesday Practice Stuff
The team scrimmaged today for the first time in front of onlookers and the media. Bob Condotta has a lot on this scrimmage, including some video from Chris Polk and Cort Dennison. The unofficial stats from the scrimmage are: Rushing: Chris Polk 9-36, Jesse Callier 7-22, Johri Fogerson 8-50, Bishop Sankey 7-53, Dezden Petty 7-37, Willis Wilson 4-23, Cole Sager 1-3, Keith Price 3- (-7), Nick Montana 2- (-1), Derrick Brown 1-(-6) Passing: Keith Price 7-9-80, Nick Montana 14-20-113, Derrick Brown 5-8-34 Receiving: Kasen Williams 4-53, Devin Aguilar 2-40, Kevin Smith 1-20, James Johnson 4-69, DiAndre Campbell 3-17, Evan Hudson 1-16, Marlion Barnett 3-25, Travon Brooks 2-13, Michael Hartvigson 1-12, Austin Seferian-Jenkins 1-7, Jamaal Jones …Tagged in this post: Cort Dennison (2011) -

Tuesday Morning Links and Ramblings
Arizona State, as we pointed out yesterday, has had all sorts of pre-season hyperbole because of Vontaze Burfict. But the injury bug has hit Erickson's team hard. Half his offensive skill starters are out and now linebacker, Brandon Magee is set to completely miss the season. For some reason I have serious doubts as to whether or not Burfict can carry this team all by himself. Oregon, on the other hand, has Lache Seastrunk buried so far down on the depth chart that a walk-on is ahead of him. Receiver Josh Huff is on day-two of no practice, and from the looks of things on videos shot at practice yesterday, he's still looking very hobbled. Of course Chip Kelly, in all of his covert cloak and dagger paranoia, won't release any information on the nature of the inj…Tagged in this post: Jonathan Amosa (2012)
