First Look: Spring Practice Day 1
The Huskies took the field this morning for the first day of spring football. There's no big mystery as to why they are practicing so early in the morning all month, but it was a beautiful morning on Montlake. With the view of cranes and a half of the old Husky Stadium still standing, we got a look at most of the 2012 Husky squad; save the incoming frosh who will remain unseen until fall camp. Realdawg's newest addition, reporter Lars Hanson will be covering the first day of spring football in much more detail soon, but here's a quick look at who did some noticeable things this morning. Kasen Williams is back to form and had a couple impossible looking receptions. Also Austin Sefarian-Jenkins is back at it as well. Both these guys will be making noise all spr… -

Oregon's Texas Connection Unraveling?
While perusing educk.com's message boards, I noticed that Oregon fans were asking "Why?" about the fact that just about every member of their roster out of Texas has left their program in the past year. There's been a mass exodus of just about every one of them. The only guy who stuck around for his entire career was LaMichael James, but he's bolted for the NFL, along with QB Darron Thomas. The Thomas departure surprised everyone. The James departure didn't. As we wrote in our article last week about the situation with the Oregon Football program, this is where things stood with every player they've pulled out of Texas the past three years. As of February 27th Darron Thomas (gone) LaMichael James (gone) Tra Carson (still on roster) Jos… -

Friday the 13th Presser Notes
Here's just a few notes on what Coach Sark had to say today when he met with the media via a phone teleconference. He said that "it's been an active month, to say the least", with the completion of the season, bowl prep and the return back to Montlake, recruiting, hiring new coaches, etc. But Coach said "it's part of the profession", and that one day the focus will be on football, then another it will be on keeping track of players and how they're doing with schoolwork, then recruiting, and so forth. Obviously, the discussion turned to the firing of Sark's long-time friend, Nick Holt. Coach said he had to "take the emotions out of it", and that he still thinks the world of Nick as a friend and a coach, "But it just d… -

TGIF Husky "Stuff"
A few notes: Sark is meeting with the press this morning but it is a teleconference; meaning that it is only for members of the media and not the usual fare of video and/or radio transmission. I explained this on the boards but wanted to explain it again so you underestand that it's not one of those big rallies to introduce coaches, or anything else. The main purpose, as I was told is to tie up loose ends from end of the season and (probably) talk about the new coaching hires. There's not a doubt that someone won't ask about the DL coaching position -- but whether or not Sark has anything to tell us yet about this is yet to be seen. Here's what I do know, as of this morning, on the subject. Enoke Brechterfield, according to my sources, is NOT in pla… -

Tuesday Morning Links and Ramblings
Let's all do a huge exhale that the Holidays are over! I love how my media colleagues are all able to run ahead to cover the team in San Antonio, while us women-folk have to lag behind as we must put Christmas dinner on the table and entertain out-of-towners. Guess there's something to be said for A) being a guy or B) being single. But I choose to be A) a woman and B) married with children. So I'm lagging. But in the spirit of getting back to work, here's some "stuff" for this Tuesday morning. This article was in the San Antonio paper over the weekend, in case you missed it, about Sark changing the culture at Washington. It's interesting that the odds have gone up a bit for the Huskies since before the holidays. Right now Baylor is favored b… -

Monday Morning links and ramblings
There's a lot of interesting stuff coming out of the conference today -- particularly with all the supposed "Black Monday" firings. The term "Black Monday" is incorrect, however, since it's used in retail/financial arenas to denote coming out ahead and not being "in the red", so to speak. A better term for the post-season firings would be "Manic Monday", as it better describes the responses of those coaches who have been fired. Rick Neuheisel says he's "numb", despite the fact that he's known all along it was likely going this way. Dennis Erickson, however, seems to have seen this one coming a long time ago, which makes me think Dennis was thinking of retiring anyway. And, oh yes, the usual names come … -

Tuesday Practice Notes, Quotes and Updates (video)
It was another wet practice on Montlake today, the only day that players and coaches will be available until the Apple Cup on Satruday. Kasen Williams, Cort Dennison, and Kieth Price were all happy to talk today about their feelings in regards to this years’ 104th installation of the rivalry game. Dennison said, “We know they’re going to bring it either way. They’re a good football team, and it doesn’t matter where your record is for the Apple Cup. We’re in-state rivals, and I think the best comes out for both of us in this game.” The Husky linebacker was also asked about his perception of the different quarterbacks for WSU. “They run a lot of the same things, all three of them are good quarterbacks. Obviously, Lobestall… -

Husky Football midweek review and links
Alex was unable to attend Tuesday practice. He is our "campus reporter", meaning, he's a student. So sometimes school work calls and he had an important assignment that needed finishing up. But luckily, for Husky fans there is a lot of places to find practice reports at no cost and Bob's Blog is where I usually start if I don't have a reporter at practice. So in case anyone missed it, the word out of practice Tuesday was that Keith Price was in uniform and did some light stuff, but nothing major. Nick Montana has been working with the 1's, while Derrick Brown has been with the 2's, along with walk-on Thomas Vincent. Now for yesterday's Pac-12 coaches call. Had to listen to the replay in the afternoon because I got in late in the mornin… -

Tuesday Morning Links
Get your donut and coffee ready, it's time for your morning headlines. The Statesmen Journal takes a look at the upcoming contest between the Huskies and Beavers this weekend. And the Albany Almanac thinks a coaching change may be in order at Oregon State. Despite the fact they're not very effective at it, this article says that Mike Riley is still "committed" to it. Here's one that appeared in the Register Guard Sunday, in case you missed it. Around the Pac-12 Here's another in the in-case-you-missed-it category about how Rick Neuheisel is "running out of time and excuses" from the L.A. Times. Don't look now, but Dennis Erickson is on the hot seat in Tempe -- courtesy of the school he smited many years ago... … -

Bleacher Blog: Devil Dawg's Cut-Up
There were thousands of us cheering on the Huskies today at the coliseum! Great place to watch a football game, I just wish the team would have played with more discipline. I will not beat around the bush, the bottom line is simple. We have been beaten by better teams, more athletic, more experienced, and even quicker at all points of attack! The main reason we are on Realdawg.com is because we are globally rounded fans that understand all of the intangibles. Specifically, recruiting! If we are going to take another step, climb another yard, or reach the summit, we have got to win the recruiting battles for the top talent at key positions. That being said, USC was qui… -

Wednesday Morning Links, News and Notes
Here's some game-week articles to help that coffee and donut go down that much easier this morning. The Los Angeles Times takes a look at the USC field general, Matt Barkley takes praise with a grain of salt And Bob Condotta of the Seattle Times looks at the motivational intangibles surrounding Saturday's game between the Huskies and Trojans. All of this tiring hoopla over Sark's comments about Matt Barkley and Lane Kiffin's reaction will only get a little bit of lip service here. But here's a look at what Ryan Davish of the Olympian had to say about it. FoxSports has a look at the friendship and relationship as it's taken a different dynamic since Sark and Kiffin became cross-conference coaching rivals. And the Daily Trojan has an articl… -

A few notes from the Pac-12 coaches teleconference
Most of the talk today was about the upcoming battle between Oregon and Stanford this weekend, but in between, there were some questions answered about the coach's own upcoming contests. Specifically, I asked a couple of questions of Steve Sarkisian and Lane Kiffin about this weekend's game between the Huskies and Trojans. There's been a running joke between the two men -- perhaps it's an attempt to "trash talk" because it's gameweek, but it's all good-natured. Sark had said Monday that he'd take Matt Barkeley before Andrew Luck, and Kiffin said that's because Sark had never been an NFL head coach, "he turned it down", Kiffin mused. Of course Sark laughed when this comment of Kiffin's was repeated back to him. T… -

Penn State Scandal: Rome is Burning
Having finally had time to sit down and research the current scandal coming out of Happy Valley, I have to say that my jaw is still on the floor. Not since we read about the scandals in the Catholic Church with sexual abuse have I been so shocked to see something this egregious make its way into the headlines, and unfortunately, into college football. It seems that, right when we think we've seen it all, something else comes out that leaves us bewildered. Now, for those of you who haven't kept up with the recent developments at Penn State, here's a quick rundown. Over the weekend, senior vice president Gary Schultz and current athletic director Tim Curley have left their posts at Penn State after being charged with felony perjury. What did they lie about?… -

Wednesday Morning Links
It's hump-day, and just a few days away from the now-annual "black out" at Husky Stadium Saturday night. Here's some links to get your morning started. And in the "know-your-opponent" category, here's a good article about Arizona QB, Nick Foles from AZCentral.com. Here's more on the same subject from Ryan Davish of the News Tribune. And here's an article from the Arizona Desert Swarm comparing Keith and Nick Foles. And don't forget, the Wildcats will be a little short-handed in their secondary because of the infamous brawl on the field in their game against UCLA last weekend. Here's a look at those suspensions and what they might mean from the Arizona Daily Star. Around the Pac-12 As if things can't continue to … -

Price is Davey O'Brien semi-finalist
Jeff Bechtold of UW Athletic Communications sent out the following press release today, announcing the Davey O'Brien 16 semi-finalists. Keith Price made the list, which is quite an accomplishment considering the fact that he was a complete unknown on a national level heading into the 2011 season. Here's the complete release: FORT WORTH, Texas - The Davey O'Brien Foundation announced today the selection of 16 semifinalists for the 2011 Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award® (The O'Brien). Narrowed down from all 120 quarterbacks from NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) schools, semifinalists were selected by The O'Brien National Selection Committee, with the Fan Vote accounting for …Tagged in this post: Keith Price (2013) -

Thursday Morning Links, extra points
As we inch closer to Saturday, some of the talk in the national media pertains to the "what if's" of Saturday. But none of the penned ideas will mean much once both the Huskies and Cardinal take the field. In the meantime, it's still fun to read it. As I said yesterday morning, it's fun to see this Husky football team be "revelent" again, and whatever the outcome of Saturday's game, they will be continue to be considered a relevent opponent everytime they play anyone from here on out. So here's some stuff to get your morning started. One thing to point out, that I hadn't noted in any previous articles, is that Shane Skov, a defensive standout for the Tree, is out with a knee injury. I had spoken of him in a previous article b… -

Wednesday morning links
There's sure a lot of buzz right now about the game this weekend. It's kind of fun for the Huskies to be back in the spotlight again as a team that is considered a "test" for the #5 team in the country. It's also fun to, once again, have something to put into parenthesis when listing the Huskies -- like a ranking. What a concept! People keep writing about how this is "the first time Washington has been ranked since 2009", but that brief ranking in '09 last one week and it never came back. This time they're up a little farther at #22. My husband always gets on my case about caring too much about rankings, but heck -- I grew up with the Dawgs always being ranked. I used to sit down on Sundays with the newspaper and go through the previous week… -

What happens if Washington, Stanford and Oregon all tie?
The conference has begun to take shape in terms of who's up, who's down, who's in, who's out, and who will still be standing in January of next year. The conference standings, as of today NORTH: Team Conference Overall Stanford 4-0 6-0 Washington 3-0 5-1 Oregon 3-0 5-1 Ore St. 1-2 1-5 WSU 1-2 3-3 Cal 0-3 3-3 SOUTH: Team Conference Overall ASU 3-1 5-2… -

Pac-12 Forecast, Oct. 15th
There's a couple of pretty big conference games this weekend that will be worth keeping an eye on, once the Husky/Colorado game is over -- of course. The biggest being the showdown in Eugene between Oregon (4-1) and Arizona State (5-1). As I have pointed out before, Oregon hasn't yet played a team with a balanced attack on offense -- except LSU, and that turned out badly for the Ducks who use a quick-strike offense that doesn't give their defense much time to rest. If Arizona State can put pressure on Thomas, plus keep whoever is at running back from getting to the outside, then they have a chance to win this game. Oregon's defense isn't stellar this year and Arizona State can definitely score points. I am not making any predictions on this game because it… -

Wednesday Practice Notes, Observations and Quotes
Coach Sarkisian characterized today’s practice as “not our sharpest, but intense and emotional.” It was another cold day on Montlake, though without yesterday’s rain. The Husky defense was flying around the field today, making some pretty spectacular plays. Sean Parker had an interception, as well as Justin Glenn. On the offensive side of the ball, freshman tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins had a great day, and looked extremely fast in his routes. He didn’t burn the defense on many plays, but he was open often, and Keith Price hit him on a number of occasions. Overall, Coach Sark said that the defense was probably the better unit on the day. Coach Sarkisian also commented on the fact that over the past 2 days, the Huskies have pra…Tagged in this post: Justin Glenn (2012), Austin Sefarian-Jenkins (2015), Kasen Williams (2015), Sean Parker (2014), Chris Polk (2011), Keith Price (2013) -

Midweek links
Now that we're only three days away from the possibility of seeing a Husky football team become 5-1, it will be interesting to read what the pundits have to say about the match-up against Colorado. Yes, it SHOULD (for all intents and purposes) be a "gimme" win, but never say never in college football. As Sark said on Monday, this team is "eerily" similar to the team he fielded two years ago in his first year -- so they're looking for that first real big win -- the kind fans says "turns a corner". Don't think that Sarkisian isn't making sure his team is fully aware of this. But I personally believe these kids are so driven to win that they will win on Saturday. Here's some different takes on the upcoming game, courtesy o… -

Notes from the Pac-12 teleconference
The Pac-12 teleconference was a little off today in terms of the time factor; one coach was missing, but all the remaining Pac-12 coaches had nothing but good things to say about the departed Mike Stoops of Arizona. I didn't jot down too many notes on other coaches besides Sarkisian and Jon Embree, except I did catch one little pearl from Chip Kelly. He was asked about the recruitment of DeAnthony Thomas and said that Oregon never recruited him, and that it was Thomas who called Oregon there at the last minute and wanted to visit. And I also have made the list of the nations richest people in Forbes magazine... Sarkisian talked to me about the clock and how it can come into play when securing a win. To put in a nutshell, Sark said that it's important to get… -

Weekend Re-hash
Okay, so I haven't been a very good blogger lately. It was a wretched weekend that saw me in horrific pain from a sore molar -- and the last thing you want to do when your face is swollen and you feel that awful is to sit in front of a laptop. Woe is me, but thankfully it happened on a bye week... The past weekend was a good study on where things are at in this conference, however. Some teams we thought weren't going to be victorious were victorious, and others looked a little exposed. Yes, I know. Oregon wound up beating the poo out of Cal in the second half of their game, but what struck me during the first half of that game was how vulnerable they can be against a team that can run AND pass. Cal's quarterback missed some wide-open passes that could have changed th… -

Thoughts on Cal @ Oregon tonight
Well we all know there's a big Pac-12 game on tonight between Oregon and Cal, and it's laughable to think that Cal has any legitimate shot at pulling an upset in Eugene. Why? Because it's in Eugene. We won't see a repeat of last year's "almost" upset that Cal pulled against the Ducks in Berkeley. HOWEVER, and this is a big however -- it's become a little obvious that there's not a lot of love between the Pac-12 and the Oregon program right now. Could be my own conspiracy theory, but it just seems that way. I look at performances by Ducks players and then check on Mondays to see who the players of the week are. Usually they're not Ducks. I have this theory that the Pac-12 has grown weary of the bad pub that has come to the confere… -

Wednesday morning links, news and notes
Our campus reporter, Alex Warneke had an obligation Tuesday that prevented him from attending practice. Since it's a bye week, I gave him the night off and didn't worry about it. But I did want to post some links to some practice stuff anyway from Bob's Blog. There's also some video on the blog. I found this article in the Houston Chronicle about how the Huskies are good enough to be 2-0 in conference and 4-1 overall, but are still not in the Top 25. And here's an article from Dave Boling of the News Tribune about the fact that both Jermaine and Jamaal Kearse have scored touchdowns this year. Bud Wither of the Seattle Times examines how the Pac-12 is stacking up nationally so far this year. As is always the case, is it just "not there" becau…
