Husky Hoops Update: Blackwell coming to UW
The UW release an official confirmation day that Perris Blackwell will be transferring in from San Fransisco. Here's the official release: SEATTLE - Perris Blackwell, a three-year letterwinner for San Francisco, will transfer to play basketball at the University of Washington, Husky Coach Lorenzo Romar announced on Monday. The University received Blackwell's financial aid agreement Monday. He will have one year of eligibility at Washington after sitting out the 2012-13 season due to NCAA transfer rules. Blackwell, a 6-foot-9, 240-pound forward, was honorable mention West Coast Conference in 2012 after he led the Dons with 6.1 rebounds per game and was second on the team with 12.7 points per game. He ranked 11th in the conference in scori… -

A Season of Unfulfilled Expectations
Some random thoughts… The ebb and flow of last night’s NIT semifinals game against Minnesota reminded me of the entire season. The Dawgs started out slow, gained momentum to finish strong in regulation time, but ultimately disappointed in the end. This edition of Romar’s team was maddening to watch at times. Yes, they did possess a great deal of talent, but much of it was raw and needed to mature as the season progressed. It was a challenge for fans to be patient in this process. For me, it is an added bonus to see players develop and mature over the course of a season, but the purpose of playing games is to win. The ultimate goal is to have both, but it is a difficult balancing act. One could look upon the open… -

New York New York
NEW YORK — After flying all the way across the country for the second time this season, Washington wants to make this trip to Madison Square Garden much more successful than the first one. The way the Huskies figure it, if they win the NIT championship it will show they truly belonged in the NCAA tournament. For the entire story, go here Another article about the upcoming NIT game for the Huskies is here which says the Huskies will "dominate" the final four of the tournament. Also, here's some stuff from the Husky Hoops Blog in the Times. If you're a Husky softball and baseball fan, here's a little info that you might enjoy reading. Lastly, here's more from Percy Allen about the Huskies and the NIT http://seatt… -

On Thursday the Husky MVP was Tony Wroten
Oregon State 86 - UW 84 The first half against the Beavers was just plain awful. It was cakewalk in the paint for Oregon State. They thrived off of UW’s poor baseline defense and inability to keep them off the glass. In my mind, this was the primary reason why UW lost the game. Right behind this was the team’s poor performance from the FT line. For a team that prides itself on making defense its top priority, and is at the top of the Pac 12 regular season standings, the results of the first half were absolutely inexcusable. The Dawgs knew what was on the line, and yet the focus and energy were just not there. For the life of me, I just don’t get that. I can understand if a player’s shooting touch i… -

On The Basketball Side: Worst Couged It Of All Time?
Final: UW 59 - WSU 55 This game was marked by some predictability. A cold and snowy day in Pullman made for a hazardous journey to Beasley Coliseum for the teams, fans, and broadcast crew. Check. Butch the Cougar yet again looked frighteningly similar to a large version of a ratty-looking, third-hand Beanie Baby. Check. At the end of the day, the Cougs Coug’d it. Check. That all said, the manner in which WSU fell short was unpredictable, in my book. I will remember this game for a long time. It was a game of runs. It was also a game that saw an absolutely pathetic display of FT shooting – and no, I’m not referring to the Dawgs here. All too often have Dawg fans complained about the teams… -

UW 79, UA 70: A Near Complete Game.
What’s not to like about this win? Walk on Brendan Sherrer started alongside Darnell Gant on Senior Day. I was happy that Coach Romar allowed the bench-warming Human Victory Cigar to see the floor at the opening tip and play 3 minutes in prime time. Terrence Ross’ game was consistent throughout (25 points, 11-19 on FGs). Tony Wroten was an absolute machine driving to the basket, limited his turnovers and displayed confidence from the FT line. Abdul Gaddy displayed great leadership, distributed the ball well, and did not have a single turnover. The only obvious shortcoming was a 3 – 18 performance from three point land. Sounds like a road game stat actually – nice to see that so many points came from inside t… -

Mr. Smith Goes to Washington...but Mr. Ross Gets Elected.
UW 71 – UCLA 69 UW’s comeback victory over the pre-season Pac-12 favorite Bruins was as sloppy as spaghetti and meat balls served as finger food for a five-year-old. That said, in the end, in spite of the mess, it was realized that a satisfying meal had still been served. We saw how UCLA had been so highly ranked, before they even played a game, only to stumble badly out of the gate. What followed was a team that rebounded to achieve a 10-4 record after the whole Reeves Nelson fiasco. This wasn’t to be such an easy game as one might have been predicted weeks ago. Things had changed. UCLA had found its way out of the wilderness to become at least a decent team within the Pac12. F… -

Wroten carries the Dawgs on his back in 60 - 54 win.
Tonight’s game was slow paced and methodical. Early on, the shots were not falling for either team. A good sign for UW, however, was that their defensive intensity was evident out of the gate. This was a welcome sight. On the road this team has had a great deal of difficulty finding it’s energy from within. Tonight was, thankfully, a different story. The team's shot selection was a positive. There were far fewer 3’s attempted and more of an emphasis upon taking the ball to the bucket. I really like seeing this on the road, where the rims don’t seem to be as friendly. Against ASU, without Tony Wroten, the Huskies only managed to shot 11 for 36 from the field. Tony’s own line was 9 –… -

Ross Steps It Up!!!
I was a little concerned when C.J. Wilcox was scratched from tonight’s lineup. He has the best outside shot and is the best FT shooter on the team. I knew that the Dawgs might struggle without him. As it turned out, it was a blessing in disguise. This gave the opportunity for someone else to step up, and as it turned out, someone did! Coach Ken Bone had a very good game plan for defending the Huskies. The Cougs played a 3-2 or 2-3 zone, depending up UW lineup, and dared their in state rivals to shoot from the outside. It was very effective. UW only managed a pathetic 29% for FGs in the first half. Terrence Ross was 1-9. The second half began with much of the same. As fate would have it t… -

Current Individual Non-strengths: What Needs to Improve
Key Players: Terrence Ross – should be more assertive, aggressive, and truly involved in the flow of the offense. He has absolutely disappeared in games. I’ve said it before, but he reminds me of former Sonic Derik McKee, who had all the talent in the world but would often be more of a spectator. He needs to step up and be a greater part of things. Darnell Gant – be more of a presence in the middle. He’s supposedly worked on his inside game. It was one of his goals going into this season. Instead, he’s again on the outside shooting 3’s. He needs to do more dirty work under the bucket. C.J. Wilcox – To his credit, he has displayed a more all-around g… -

Dawgs Looking Even Better
For me, the 16 point victory over the Ducks came as no surprise on UW’s home court. What was so pleasing in this effort was to see the balanced scoring. C.J. Wilcox came off the bench to drop 24, tying a career high. His sharp shooting, displayed from both inside and out, helped to effectively repel a couple of Oregon runs. Tony Wroten chipped in 17, Abdul Gaddy 12, and Terrence Ross added 11. From yesterday’s blog: “One of the keys to handling the Ducks will be if the Dawgs are able to cause turnovers that can lead to easy points.” Well, UW ended up scoring 22 points off turnovers (Oregon had 9 points in the same category). The defensive effort was there from the get-go and didn’t seem t… -

First Pac12 Homestand for the Dawgs.
I don’t know about you, but it was a bit of a challenge for me last Thursday evening. I switched back and forth between UW football and basketball on the flat screen. The football game was an emotional roller coaster. It had as many ups and downs as a Jaguar XKR-S lead-pedaling down an old road littered with deep potholes. When I switched to basketball, on the other hand, there was a calming familiarity. What was obvious – I was watching a Romar-coached team – defensive-minded and athletic. Things were clicking. I hadn’t seen this brand of basketball from the Dawgs in a while. The defensive pressure was quite evident. On offense, they seemed to have rediscovered “that zone&rdquo… -

What's Wrong With This Team?
Five major issues of concern: 1) This team lacks inside scoring threats. They have some very good outside sharp shooters, but they can run hot and cold. On the road, this has been a problem. If they rely too much upon the outside shot, they get to the foul line far less often than the competition. 2) They miss Aziz on the defensive end. He has his strengths and weaknesses like any player. His lack of lateral quickness has been evident, but he is still an intimidating presence in the middle. Take out that piece to the puzzle and teams have been finding a soft spot in the paint against the dawgs. Without him, on defense, UW players have had to pay more a… -

Tony's Team?
The 2011-12 husky men’s basketball club is still searching for its identity, but last night it is was Tony Wroten’s team. The uber-talented freshman guard poured in a career high 27 points – 4 more than he scored against Duke. Abdul Gaddy complimented Wroten’s effort with 17 points on 6 of 10 shooting. UCSB was not a cupcake-go-through-the-motions opponent. They’ve been to the Big Dance two years straight. Without Aziz in the middle, they outrebounded UW. Early on, their 7 footer, dominated in the paint. UCSB shot a high percentage from the field in the first half (55.6%), led by 3, and looked to be the better team. For UW, against Duke, a smaller lineup was more effective – … -

Any Winning in Losing?
Four road games = four loses. So, all is lost? I don’t think so. Historically, Romar-led teams have tended to start slow out of the gate. This team has proven to be no different. Today’s contest against Duke was both disappointing and yet encouraging. Yes, this was yet another loss on the road. That, in itself, is hardly good news. To begin the game, the defensive intensity was evident, but the dawgs seemed to be too tight when they had the ball – an example of this was a rare air ball by C. J. Wilcox. Wroten was the only player who could manage to score with any frequency in the opening minutes. Once the teams seemed to settle in, the Blue Devils found a rhythm and began to pull away. The dawgs see… -

Disappointing Loss in Nevada
Feeling any better now? Sometimes a day or two will help. I’m usually pretty even keeled about sports. That wasn’t always the case in my younger days. I used to get very upset and depressed when my team fell short. Now, for the most part, I get over losses soon after I turn off the flat screen. Life for me is too important to stop living because the ball didn’t bounce our way. Please don’t get me wrong. I consider myself to be a passionate fan and watching a losing effort isn’t on my list of favorite things to do. I will yell at the television. It doesn’t seem to matter to the players and coaches, but there is certainly something very therapeutic about it for me. I didn’t pay for… -

Hard Lessons
I’ve been told that there are opportunities for growth in how one responds to adversity. Well, watching the first half of the game today, there certainly was plenty of adversity. Will lessons be learned from this? I sure hope so. This was tough to watch. The dawgs were on the road, facing a hostile crowd, playing in the Central time zone with an 11:00 a.m. tip off. Early on, all of this seemed to have and thrown off the internal clock of quite a few of the Washington players and affected the team psyche. Welcome to the road, young pups. Welcome to the road. It does take some getting used to. Things are a lot easier in the friendly confines of Alaska Airlines Arena, where energy can be mustered from a large pack of ravenous, pu… -

Introduction, brief history (and a touch of narcissism)
You know me around these parts as “Joe_L.” I’ve been a member of Realdawg since near the beginning - so many moons ago that I can’t remember the year. If you somehow haven’t picked up on it from the boards, I have a passion for Husky men’s basketball. I never attended UW. (My undergraduate degree was completed at WWU in Bellingham). My father was a blue collar millwright, worked at the pulp and paper mill in Port Townsend for thirty-three years, and remains a faithful follower of the Seattle sports scene. He’s nearly ninety-two now, still driving down to the local Port Townsend Safeway upon occasion, and living in his own home. He was and is an avid fan of Husky football and men’s basketball.&nb… -

In the Paint
Since we're en route to hiring a new basketball beat writer, we didn't have coverage of last night's game! But take heart, soon we'll be back on press row and Wilson Tsoi is going to be photographing the Hoops Dawgs as well. Our basketball meistro, Joe L. has signed up to be our guest blogger and we are looking forward to having the type of hoops coverage we used to have on this site (last year we lacked after Jon George had to leave during mid-season when his other obligations took over!) We started Realdawg.com as a football site, and have grown to cover more Husky sports. We hope to continue on with this with both Women's and Men's hoops. Good help is hard to find sometimes and so we want to make sure that we have the right person in place when the hoo… -

Men's Hoops Stuff
The Huskies are still in the World Vision Basketball Classic that resumes for them tonight at 7 pm when they take on Portland. In the meantime, here's some "stuff", as we like to call it. The Dawgs are getting some attention in the rankings, and will likely be back in the Top 25 soon. The main reason they didn't start out that way this year was because of the departure of guys Isaiah Thomas, et al. They're considered a "young team" by most pundits. Today's Top 25 as provided by ESPN Percy Allen also looks at where the Huskies are on the national stage at this point. Also here's a look at stats after two games. As most already know, Landen Lucas decided he wants to go to Kansas over the weekend so we can close the book on th… -

Bad news for Husky Hoops
The UW sent out a release today about Scott Suggs. I was out for my regular "Friday lunchdate" with my husband when the release came in so if you already saw this, then you already know. Suggs will miss 8 to 12 weeks after having foot surgery, and that's not good news for the Huskies' perimeter game, considering that Suggs was 3rd in the conference last season after shooting for 45% from 3-point land. Romar was available to the media today as well (but because it was a last minute deal, I missed it). I'm sure those quotes will be up on the official site soon. Suggs, along with Darnell Gant, was one of two seniors (scholarshipped) on the roster. For the complete release, go here …
