Dawgs Looking Even Better

Posted on January 01, 2012 at 17:55:19 by Walter Klockers

For me, the 16 point victory over the Ducks came as no surprise on UW’s home court.  What was so pleasing in this effort was to see the balanced scoring.   C.J. Wilcox came off the bench to drop 24, tying a career high.  His sharp shooting, displayed from both inside and out, helped to effectively repel a couple of Oregon runs.  Tony Wroten chipped in 17, Abdul Gaddy 12, and Terrence Ross added 11.

From yesterday’s blog:

“One of the keys to handling the Ducks will be if the Dawgs are able to cause turnovers that can lead to easy points.”

Well, UW ended up scoring 22 points off turnovers (Oregon had 9 points in the same category).  The defensive effort was there from the get-go and didn’t seem to let up as the game progressed.  Washington’s guards have more length, are more athletic, and they took advantage of these miss matches all night long.  Oregon guard, Devoe Joseph, shot 1 – 13 from the field, in part because of the relenting defensive pressure.

For me, one of the unsung heroes of the game was Desmond Simmons.  It didn’t show up in the stat sheet, but his defense on Oregon’s E.J. Singler was a BIG plus.  That Duck moved around the perimeter from point to wing, and encountered a number of Dawg defenders:  Gant, Wilcox, Ross, Breunig and Simmons.  Simmons was the only defender that could stop Singler from slashing into the paint, and except for a couple of late rotations, his effort against him was absolutely stellar.  I’m amazed at how quick his feet are for a guy his size.

Next up on the slate are two road games at Colorado and Utah.  On paper, these should be wins for the Dawgs, but all this will depend upon how the team has matured.  Hopefully, earlier tough lessons on the road have left a bitter taste in their mouths -- that will be remembered.

As we all know, Romar-led teams have historically started slow out of the gate.  Let’s hope that the slow start is now behind this team, and that they are now comfortable enough to perform well away from home.
