UW 79, UA 70: A Near Complete Game.
What’s not to like about this win? Walk on Brendan Sherrer started alongside Darnell Gant on Senior Day. I was happy that Coach Romar allowed the bench-warming Human Victory Cigar to see the floor at the opening tip and play 3 minutes in prime time. Terrence Ross’ game was consistent throughout (25 points, 11-19 on FGs). Tony Wroten was an absolute machine driving to the basket, limited his turnovers and displayed confidence from the FT line. Abdul Gaddy displayed great leadership, distributed the ball well, and did not have a single turnover.
The only obvious shortcoming was a 3 – 18 performance from three point land. Sounds like a road game stat actually – nice to see that so many points came from inside the paint today. Early in the season, this team was so hot or cold because of the perceived conviction that the long ball was the key to victory. Today proved this wrong.
In the contest there were two monster, highlight reel plays that will forever be imprinted on my mind. One was Aziz N’Diaye’s block, push of the ball up court, possession, and flush. (Did he dribble it once or twice?) That was an amazing display for a big man. The other was Wroten’s drive and flush over Angelo Chol. Even more satisfying for me was the fact that Chol chose UA over the Dawgs, and in the end “got what he deserved” on that play. If you didn’t see the game, trust me, both of these were jaw-droppers.
Romar-coached teams have historically started the season slowly and finished strong. Will that be the case this year? With the final three games being played on the road it will be a definite challenge. Still, after today’s performance, I’d say that this team has got a good chance to finish strong.
This was the first time this season that the team maintained its focus from start to finish. Is there more of the same to come? The Dawgs have two NBA top 20 picks on the roster. Anything can happen.
On a side note: UW and UA are in on a number of top 2013 PSAs, including Aaron Gordon and Jabari Bird. Sweeping the Wildcats can only help Romar and Company in this effort.
GO DAWGS!!!
