Wroten carries the Dawgs on his back in 60 - 54 win.
Tonight’s game was slow paced and methodical. Early on, the shots were not falling for either team. A good sign for UW, however, was that their defensive intensity was evident out of the gate. This was a welcome sight. On the road this team has had a great deal of difficulty finding it’s energy from within. Tonight was, thankfully, a different story.
The team's shot selection was a positive. There were far fewer 3’s attempted and more of an emphasis upon taking the ball to the bucket. I really like seeing this on the road, where the rims don’t seem to be as friendly.
Against ASU, without Tony Wroten, the Huskies only managed to shot 11 for 36 from the field. Tony’s own line was 9 – 12. He carried the Dawgs on his back to victory, scoring 22 points and playing a smarter all around game.
Who cares if Tony only goes to his left? Even when opponents shade him to the left, they still can’t stop him. Why should he change that? If his opponent backs off of him, he takes his first step to the right and then makes a hard cut back to the left, or he stays left and just manages to get a more forceful head of steam going to the hoop. No matter how you slice it, the results are the same. His quickness is amazing.
A telling statistic is that all of Wroten’s points tonight were from inside the paint. The 6’5” guard is the best post up player on the team. He if could manage to develop his outside shot and hit his FTs…. Man!!!
The highlight of the night was undoubtedly Wroten’s monster dunk. On the play, Tony drove from the top of the key and absolutely posterized Jonathan Gilling, knocking him to the floor and drawing a foul. He made the FT for a memorable 3 point play.
The hard-nosed play of Austin Seferian-Jenkins was another highlight. I find myself watching more action off the ball when he’s in the game. He’s pure brute force, but still very much a clean player – a real joy to watch. He knows how to body up to an opponent very well and plays a smart brand of basketball for someone noted more for his play on the gridiron.
Nice to have another road win. Hopefully, tonight’s victory will be another building block to the team’s growth and maturation.
