Huskies vs USC post-game quotes
Washington Head Coach Lorenzo Romar
Opening Statement:
We made it through. After the UCLA game we weren’t sure who would be ready to play, who would be available for us. This was a really good game for us. We haven’t had one of these in a long time where we were able to go out and really, really compete but yet give some other guys an opportunity to get out there on the floor. Overall, I thought, with the exception of too many turnovers, we handled ourselves pretty good tonight.
What does this game say about the team’s maturation?
It’s been a work in progress for a while. When I looked at the big picture with our schedule, and I saw that we were home-game heavy earlier in the schedule, I thought, with our team, that’s exactly what we needed because I thought we might be able to trick a couple of teams until we started to get better. If this would have been reversed, if we would have had five out of seven on the road early, our record would be far different because we weren’t ready for that. But now I think we’re a little more prepared to handle what we’re about to face. I’m not making any predictions; I just think we’re a little more prepared to handle it.
You have won a few consecutive road games, has your team turned a corner as a road team?
I’ve been saying that I think, and I don’t know if people really believe me, we turned the corner at Utah in that three or four point victory, that people have been very critical of. I think we turned the corner there because we were a different offensive team. We still only scored in the fifties but we shared the ball better. We handled the road better. That’s when I first saw that we had made progress on the road. Before that we had been very, very poor on the road. But that’s when it started. Let’s hope that progress continues to be made.
Tony Wroten
On how he’s feeling:
[I’m] banged up a lot. It’s still sore and all, but you know, I feel good. Sitting down a lot at half time, it gets stiff. But we got the win and (Monday) during practice, we just got to get back healthy because we have two big road games coming up.
Have you dealt with something like this before?
No. I’ve been kneed before, but I’ve never had a contusion like this where it hurt like this. But it’s not major. I just have to keep rehabbing it and I’ll be fine.
Have you thought about not playing tonight?
No. I always want to play, but in the end you have to look at the big picture and if I was unable to play I wouldn’t have played. But I knew coming in that if I knew I could play at least a little bit then I would play.
Darnell Gant
On the game:
It’s big [winning tonight] because it shows what our character is. It shows that we’re looking at the big picture and we can’t overlook USC because they’re at the bottom of the Pac-12 right now. We have to take this game just like we played UCLA and take it as we played Arizona. Take them as they’re a team that could potentially knock us off and we don’t want that. We have to keep ourselves in a position where we have a nice cushion.
Was it an ugly game?
Yeah, because they slowed it down a lot. They tried to run a lot of clock and tried to slow it down. When you play a team like that, they kind of lull you to sleep and sometimes you get caught standing and not moving the ball and moving around. In the second half, we did a better job adjusting and moving the ball around.
USC Head Coach Kevin O’Neill
On the game
If we made some shots or layups or free throws in the first 30 minutes, I mean… we had good looks. Greg Allen is 1 for 10 from the three, and if we don’t shoot the ball any better now we are not going to win. Toward the end during the last eight minutes it just got worse. We don’t have the numbers with all the injuries and losses in recruiting classes and all of that. It’s just the way it is.
On Consistency
We were 1 for 16 from the three tonight. We’re just inexperienced, young, and thin. When we were in Brazil, none of these guys other than Mo (Maurice Jones) were starters. We lost four out of our top five from graduating, to the NBA. If you took any team, say Washington’s team, and took away all their juniors and seniors off it, which is what we have, and then take away their next best four guys, they’d look like us. Any team in the league would.
On his patience
Let’s just say I’m glad I’m 55 instead of 35. At 35 I wouldn’t be handling this very well. But I’m more frustrated for our guys. They give good effort; only turned it over 12 times, and the other night just 9 times. We put ourselves in position to knock down shots and get to the line. I’m sure it’s getting difficult for these guys as we keep going down the line.
