No Trap Tonight: Huskies blast past Trojans

Post-Game Quotes

If someone had said during the first half that the Huskies would wind up scoring 69 points in their game against USC, we might have scoffed.

In what was a slow-to-start, sloppy, possible trap-game for the Washington Huskies (9-2, 16-7) it was a late burst off the bench that made the route of USC (1-10, 6-18) that much more enjoyable for the crowd at Hec Ed.

The Huskies beat the visiting Trojans 69-41.

Tony Wroten led all scorers with 13 points, 6 boards and 8 assists, while Garrett Jackson led the men of Troy with 15 points, 3 rebounds and 1 assist.

"When I looked at the big picture with our schedule, and I saw that we were home-game heavy earlier in the schedule", Lorenzo Romar said about this possible let-down game, "I thought, with our team, that’s exactly what we needed because I thought we might be able to trick a couple of teams until we started to get better."

USC head coach, Kevin O'Neill bemoanded the loss of key players to injury, "If we made some shots or layups or free throws in the first 30 minutes, I mean… we had good looks", he said, "Greg Allen is 1 for 10 from the three, and if we don’t shoot the ball any better now we are not going to win. Toward the end during the last eight minutes it just got worse. We don’t have the numbers with all the injuries and losses in recruiting classes and all of that. It’s just the way it is."

Forget the excuses about injured players and sanctions for the Trojans though, the Huskies truly needed to stay awake during this game because they're heading into the last, crucial hurdle of regular-season play and have to travel to Eugene next week.

USC played slow, with the occasional attempt at a transition game that left them putting up shots that clanged off the rim, but more than that the Huskies were cold as ice for much of the game in shooting percentage; going 28 for 58 overall (48.3%) from field.

"When you play a team like that, they kind of lull you to sleep and sometimes you get caught standing and not moving the ball and moving around", said Darnell Gant.

USC was a lowly 28% for the night (17 of 59) so as sloppy as the Huskies played for most of the game, USC was even sloppier.

Aside from Wroten's 13 points, Terrence Ross added another 10 points and 14 rebounds for the double-double. Darnell Gant was the only Husky for the night to sink two 3-pointers.

Night's best:

USC: G. Jackson 15 pts, 3 rb, 1 ast, 1 stl, 4 blk
Washington: T. Wroten 13 pts, 6 rb, 8 ast

Box Score

  1 2 F
  USC 19 22 41
  WASH 29 49 69
